Its fruit provide useful returns in the autumn and it will grow just about anywhere.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The modern Thorn less Blackberry is quickly becoming the gardener’s friend, due to the simple fact that it can at last be grown like a normal cane type fruit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Gone are the days when to get a kg of Blackberry fruit meant getting dressed up to ward of all the thorns. The modern Blackberry may be used to cover a trellis; or it can be trained along strong wires, planted in rows 4 ft apart; or used to surround an allotment, for after a few years the Blackberry plants will make an impenetrable hedge when established.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cultivated Blackberries are second to Loganberries for making the highest prices at your local produce market, a fact that should not be missed. The berries freeze well and are much in demand for this purpose. The fruit, which must have turned coal black before picking but not be overripe, is sold in 450 gram punnets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blackberry Plants require a soil containing plenty of well rotted Organic Vegetable Compost incorporated into it, we have an article on how to make your own garden compost, you can view this at:-&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://gardencomposthelp.blogspot.com/"&gt;http://gardencomposthelp.blogspot.com/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;incorporating organic vegetable compost, will help retain moisture in the summer, otherwise the fruit will not swell and remain small and seedy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are a few very large berried varieties around, some of these have berries 2.5cm in circumference and full of flavour.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All berries should have been picked by the end of November the winter work should start, all this entails is a bit of pruning and adding a covering of well rotted garden compost around the base of the Blackberry Canes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Planting new Blackberry Plants should take place around March if possible, on later than mid April, when the ground is clear of frost. Set the plants 3 metres apart for they will soon fill the gaps between them.
